HIGHLIGHTS: This trip will focus on the hydrogeology of some urban outcrops of the Platteville limestone.  We will travel by trolley along West River Road in Minneapolis from St. Anthony Falls to Camp Cold Water Spring.  Along the way we will make several stops to see examples of springs and examine some of the special challenges of springs that emerge in what has become an urban setting.  We will discuss some of the special features of the (Newton Horace) Winchell Trail as well as see an example of a sinkhole in the heart of a South Minneapolis residential neighborhood.  We will stop at Lock and Dam #1 (Ford Bridge) to see a spectacular outcropping of the Platteville.  Our last stop will be historic Cold Water Spring (between Minnehaha Park and Fort Snelling) which has been in the news a lot lately regarding the re-route of Highway 55 and the proposed airport expansion.  We will then travel back to Boom Island Park-ETA 1:00. (There are several restaurants in the area for those interested in lunch.)

WHEN AND HOW. We will meet at Boom Island Park in N.E. Minneapolis.  (The park is located at the East end of the Plymouth Ave Bridge-exact address 700 Sibley St. NE).  Parking is available in this Minneapolis Park--$l for all day.  We will board the trolley at Boom Island and be ready for an 8:00 sharp departure.  Check-in begins 7:30 a.m. Please arrive early to allow for timely departure.  (Sorry, due to congested travel and limited parking, no private vehicles allowed on this trip.)

Due to the special charter of the trolley for this inner-city trip, space is limited.  Participation is limited to 39 participants (29 seats plus 10 standing-room-on ly spots) and will be based on a first-registered/paid, first-seated arrangement.  To make sure we maximize capacity, payment in advance is required.  No registrations/payme nts can be accepted the day of the field trip.
