Rock and Mineral Identification

Rock and Mineral Identification

At the Geological Society of Minnesota, we frequently receive questions about rock and mineral identification.  As it often difficult to distinguish between the various rock and mineral types using a photograph; instead, feel free to bring it to one of our upcoming GSM Lectures. Often times there may be someone on hand who might be able to help with the identification. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Another option is to bring your item into a reliable rock shop, and they might be able to help you identify the item. GSM isn't able to endorse any specific shop, but if you look over the listings, you might find one that fits your needs. Be sure to call ahead to make sure that there will be someone on hand who can help you. For a listing of local, and not so local shops, check out our Rock and Mineral shop page:
